For many decades human activities have increased nutrient load to Lakes of Onkamo. In the 2010s, a lot of renovation and restoration work has been done in the catchment area.

Kaakkurinlampi pond and the outflowing channel is an important sub-catchment area in Jukajärvi area. The channel ends in Ruukkisuo wetland which is the first wetland unit that the villages accomplished in cooperation.

A decade after fish death events in the Jukajoki river system, Snowchange has carried out the final leg of catchment-wide restoration efforts that include spawning and habitat actions for salmonid fish.

Kissapuro is an important part of the Jukajoki river restoration actions. Kisspuro stream and catchment area has been surveyed for erosion, acidic sites and for its contribution of iron loading into lake Jukajärvi.

In July 2010 Heikki Roivas, a fisherman from the village of Selkie observed a flock of gulls flying over river Jukajoki. The gulls were feasting on dead fish floating in the river. 
The conditions in the river had become deadly due to very acidic discharge from nearby peat mining area. The next summer (2011) the fish died again. These sad events have led to a lot of action. A large scale watershed-wide restoration began after these events.

Vehkasuo marshmire is a small nature’s jewel in the Jukajoki catchment area. 20 hectares in size, it is a typical middle boreal open fen and the only marshmire in its natural state in the whole Jukajoki catchment area.
